“Threadable were an invaluable part of our team as we accelerated our product development in ways which we could not have achieved on our own. Threadable also provided support across different aspects of the project from product workshops to tech recruitment to system architecture. We will continue to work with Threadable on projects as they have proven their ability to deliver and are a great team to work with."

Understanding the Mission
FoodCloud operates at the critical intersection of food waste and food insecurity. With 33% of food wasted globally—producing four times more carbon emissions than global aviation—while 821 million people struggle with hunger, their mission is more vital than ever. Since its inception in 2012, FoodCloud has facilitated surplus food donations from businesses to charities, growing into a key player in the UK and Ireland, with expanding operations in Canada, Central Europe, and Australia.
The Challenge
Despite its impact and global recognition, FoodCloud’s technology platform struggled to meet increasing demands. Key challenges included:
- Scalability limitations restricting international expansion.
- Inconsistent food classification and regulatory standards across regions.
- Complex integration needs with major supermarket chains.
- Accessibility issues for charity workers in remote locations.
- Lack of a cohesive IT strategy and infrastructure to support long-term growth.
The Solution: A Comprehensive Digital Transformation
Threadable partnered with FoodCloud to lead a full-scale digital transformation, ensuring their platform could support future growth and operational complexity. Our work included:
- Strategic IT Consulting: Developed a tailored IT strategy to align with FoodCloud’s operational goals, ensuring long-term scalability and flexibility.
- Integrated Platform Implementation: Leveraged Threadable’s Software Factory approach to create a unified, modular system capable of handling diverse food standards and regulatory requirements across multiple regions.
- Web and Mobile Applications: Development of B2B and B2C apps for Android, iOS, and web, enabling seamless engagement for donors, retailers, and charities.
- Enterprise Middleware: Designed and implemented middleware to integrate with multiple supermarket chains, including Tesco and Aldi, streamlining donation processes.
- Scalable Backend Infrastructure: Built a robust backend to support food producers, retailers, and charities with improved data management and real-time updates.
- Multi-Region & Multi-Language Support: Enabled FoodCloud’s expansion into new geographical markets with localised solutions.
- Cloud-Based Infrastructure: Deployed a secure and scalable system using AWS and Microsoft Azure, ensuring high availability, data security, and seamless performance across different regions.
- Open APIs for Seamless Integration: Developed APIs for donors, food banks, and charities to integrate their existing systems with the FoodCloud platform.
Impact & Results
Through Threadable’s technology leadership, FoodCloud transformed from a locally focused initiative into an internationally scalable enterprise. With a future-proof platform in place, FoodCloud can continue to grow its mission—connecting businesses with surplus food to those who need it most, on a global scale, while ensuring seamless operations powered by a strong IT strategy and Azure-based infrastructure.
